First reflection

Week 2:“What kind of self-reflection experiences did you have in your freshman English class? What have you learned (related to self-reflection or writing in general) that has stayed with you and supported your writing?”

My self-reflective experience in ENGL 110 was learning to identify problems with your writing and accepting feedback from others on your writing. My first paper in the course was “Language and Literacy Narratives,” it was about my experiences and pressures of learning English after coming to the United States. What I learned about myself when I wrote this article is that when I know a new language, I speak with an accent and cannot express myself clearly, which causes me to care too much about what others think and lack self-confidence. I think many of my classmates have been in a similar situation to me. So this article just wants to tell readers who have the same experience that when you encounter others laughing at them, ignore them and work hard to improve your reading and writing performance. It helped me learn to identify and practice key rhetorical terms and strategies in writing situations.

In peer review, we learned that in language and literacy narrative essays we talked about our own experiences of learning a language, reading, and writing. By reading each other’s articles, we discovered that each other’s language learning experiences were somewhat similar, which brought us closer and made us friends who helped each other.

These have allowed me to learn a lot of knowledge that was not valued and understood before, such as MLA format, the credibility and accuracy of cited works, and identifying sources. The learning outcomes of these courses are valuable learning experiences for me and will help me in my future writing career. Another thing I learned from the course is that feedback from others is very helpful. After we finish writing the article, we can listen to other people’s opinions through discussion and reading, and then modify the article. These valuable learning experiences helped me improve my grammar and logic when writing papers.
